My Daughter Renamed My Alexa to Chompy and Didn’t Tell Me

Technology has a way of sneaking up on us and throwing curveballs that keep life interesting. It can sometimes feel like a full time job just to keep up. 

Just the other day, I had one of those “laugh or cry” moments when one of those technology curve balls hit me square in the face, and it all started with my daughter and our beloved Alexa, or should I say, Chompy.

The Mysterious Case of Chompy

The other day, I was running through the normal morning routine: get breakfast going, feed the dog, let the chickens out, feed the pigs (yes, we have a bit of a zoo over here), switch the laundry over…you know the drill. I was trying to get a jump start on the day. As usual, I relied on Alexa to keep me organized. “Alexa, what’s on my schedule today?” Silence. Nothing. Ghost Town! “Alexa, play my morning playlist.” More silence. Is this thing broken?!

I started to wonder if Alexa had finally met her match in my chaotic household. That’s when my daughter strolled in, a mischievous grin on her face. She didn’t have to say anything, but I knew she had a hand to play in Alexa’s sudden silence based on the look on her face.

She looked at me, straight in the eye and claimed proudly that she renamed Alexa! Apparently, in a moment of pure childhood genius, she’d decided that our smart assistant needed a new name. And that’s how Alexa became Chompy.

The Challenges of a Renamed Alexa

From that moment on, the quirks and giggles multiplied. Commands that used to flow smoothly became a comedy of errors. Let me tell you, Chompy doesn’t just roll off the tongue.

“Chompy, turn on the lights!”
“Chompy, what’s the weather like?”
“Chompy, add milk to the shopping list!”

At first, it was a bit frustrating, but soon, the whole family was in on the joke. We quickly embraced Chompy, but it got me thinking about how we rely on technology and what happens when things don’t go exactly as planned.

This wasn’t the first time technology had played tricks on me. I’ve had my fair share of auto-correct mishaps (don’t even ask about the time I asked my husband to get Honey from the store and autocorrect changed it to hiney. He still won’t let me live it down), printer malfunctions and let’s not even talk about the time I accidentally start a video call with my shirt on inside out.

These little tech hiccups remind us that while technology is incredible, it’s not infallible.
